LinkedIn Part 1: Give your profile image a pinch of pizzazz!

LinkedIn is the third biggest social media site behind only Facebook and Twitter. Primarily used by professionals, it’s much more than just an online CV; it’s possibly the best place to share content, engage with others and promote your own talent!

Elementary Copy - Linked In Part 1

LinkedIn is third social media platform that I previously identified as being important to my business, after, you guessed it, Facebook and Twitter.

I have an old and stale account that I never embraced, I just heard other people saying “you should have a LinkedIn account” so I set one up, without proper thought or attention.

I entered the basic information but I never spent any time trying to make it look good. Currently it just sits there gaining little to no attention.

So after a little research, this is what I need to do to make it look the bees-knees!

Turn off activity broadcast

While you’re upgrading your profile you don’t want all your contacts to be bombarded with every update. Turning your activity broadcast off means that no-one else knows that you’re doing it.

To do this, go to ‘Profile > Edit Profile.’

Near the top of the page on the right hand side is a ‘Notify Your Network?’ button. Ensure this says ‘No’ to turn off your activity broadcast.

Customise your URL

Add your own name to it. Keep it brief and don’t try to be clever. As it is, your user name is just a series of instantly forgettable numbers and letters.

To do this, go to ‘Profile > Edit Profile.’

Underneath your profile summary, you should see your LinkedIn URL. Next to this is a gear icon. Click on it and then look on the right hand side of the page your taken to (your Public Profile) and click on the ‘Customise your Public Profile URL.’

LinkedIn will let you know if your URL is a valid one or not!

Add a background photo

Make your page more striking with an image of something that represents what you do or an achievement – anything will be better than just the standard background wall!

To do this, go to ‘Profile > Edit Profile.’

At the very top of the page, you should see the ‘Add a background Photo’ option.

And don’t forget to position the image as you want it to look!

Add a profile photo

We always want to put a face to a name – it’s human instinct, so make sure you add one!

And make sure it’s appropriate – remember that industry professionals will be looking at this, so a photo of you on a Saturday night after a few beers isn’t going to cut it, no matter how funny you think it is!

To do this, go to ‘Profile > Edit Profile.’

In your profile summary, you should see a picture frame on the left hand side ready for you to add your best shot!

Create a profile badge

This is the official LinkedIn button that links to your profile page – it’s a bit like the Facebook “Like” button or the Twitter “Follow” button. You get a few different options, so choose the one that you like the most.

To do this, go to ‘Profile > Edit Profile.’

Underneath your profile summary, you should see your LinkedIn URL. Next to this is a gear icon. Click on it, then scroll down the page that you’re forwarded to, and keeping an eye on the right hand side you should see the heading ‘Your Public Profile Badge.’

Click on it and decide which image you’d like to use from the list shown. Now copy the HTML snippet to the right of the design and add it to your website or blog and it will appear as if by magic!

Now potential customers can instantly link straight to your LinkedIn page and find out a bit more about your work.
